A fire broke out at one of the world's largest battery storage plants in California's Monterey County on Thursday.

Flames continued to spew early Friday morning in the community of Moss Landing and the Elkhorn Slough area in northern Monterey County after a major fire at a battery storage plant that brought evacuations.

Evacuations ordered and Highway 1 was closed in Monterey County after a fire erupted at the Moss Landing Power Plant.

A plume of material released from the plant contained hydroflouride, a toxic gas, that is now being monitored by Monterey County.

The fire at Moss Landing Power Plant has rekindled, just hours after fire officials told reporters that the fire was nearly extinguished.

MOSS LANDING — Highway 1 was closed and evacuations were ordered after a fire erupted Monday afternoon at the Moss Landing Power Plant, according to authorities. The fire was reported around 3 p.m. at the plant, located on Highway 1, KSBW 8 Action News reported.
